TrueBeam® Radiotherapy System

Radiation Therapy in Just 5 Treatment Sessions

For patients with prostate cancer, five treatment sessions for an entire course of radiation therapy—versus the standard of up to 45 treatments—can be a huge relief and help patients get on the road to recovery sooner.

Varian’s TrueBeam® radiotherapy system—along with BrainLab ExacTrac Dynamic—is designed with this kind of improved patient experience in mind. The radiotherapy is so precise that it can deliver higher doses of radiation at each visit, allowing you to complete the full course of radiation therapy for prostate cancer in as little as two weeks.

TrueBeam and ExacTrac Dynamic are part of a technology partnership between BCH and Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers-Boulder (RMCC-Boulder). Learn more.

How TrueBeam Works

  • TrueBeam delivers a highly precise type of radiation beam called stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).
  • SBRT allows radiation oncologists to accurately target the prostate and destroy the cancerous cells within it.
  • The BrainLab ExacTrac Dynamic targeting system gives us the ability to monitor your body’s subtle movements during treatment, such as when you are breathing. We can then make small adjustments on the fly, keeping radiation exposure to healthy cells at a minimum.

TrueBeam is the most advanced radiation technology for daily treatments and is available at the Tebo Family Medical Pavilion on Foothills Medical Campus.

Benefits of TrueBeam

  • Fewer radiotherapy sessions: TrueBeam delivers the entire course of treatment over five short visits, rather than the daily radiation treatments for up to nine weeks of conventional radiation therapy. Fewer treatment means less trips to the cancer center, helping you get on the road to recovery sooner.
  • Fast: Using SBRT, we can deliver the radiation treatments quickly—within 10 minutes or less, compared to the typical treatments that usually take 10 to 30 minutes.
  • Accurate: The system treats prostate cancer tumors with pinpoint accuracy and precision, improving the effectiveness of treatments.
  • Noninvasive: TrueBeam rotates around the patient to deliver the radiation dose from different angles.
  • Motion detection: It’s used in tandem with BrainLab ExacTrac Dynamic, which automatically corrects for your body’s movement, activating the radiation only when the tumor is in the optimal position for treatment.

Who is a candidate for TrueBeam?

Our team of prostate cancer experts at Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers will help you understand your disease risk. They will discuss whether you’re a good candidate for this faster approach. It is recommended for patients with:

  • Localized prostate cancer, meaning the cancer has not spread to other parts of the body
  • Low, intermediate, and selected patients with high disease risk, which is determined using a number of clinical factors, including the aggressiveness of the cancer
  • Selected patients with limited disease outside of the prostate

The Only Medical Campus North of Denver to Offer 5-Visit Radiotherapy With BrainLab ExacTrac Dynamic

BCH’s Foothills Medical Campus is the first and only campus north of Denver to offer the combination of TrueBeam with BrainLab ExacTrac Dynamic. With the addition of ExacTrac Dynamic, we can monitor motion during TrueBeam radiotherapy and, if needed, make small adjustments to keep the prostate on target and radiation exposure to healthy cells at a minimum.
