Family Birth Center: 5th Anniversary of Baby-Friendly Designation

For the fifth year in a row, BCH’s Family Birth Center at Foothills Hospital has achieved the highly prestigious international Baby-Friendly designation, which recognizes our efforts in giving babies a healthy start in life.

The designation requires birth centers to have policies that enhance mother-baby bonding, offer optimal care for infant feeding and ensure a baby’s nutritional needs are adequately met, regardless of whether a mom chooses to breastfeed or formula-feed. To date, only about 600 birth facilities out of the thousands nationwide have earned the prestigious Baby-Friendly designation. Learn more about what being Baby-Friendly means.

"Celebrate 6 Award of Breastfeeding Excellence”

The Family Birth Center also earned the “Celebrate 6 Award of Breastfeeding Excellence” from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). This award demonstrates that our Family Birth Center is practicing at least six of the World Health Organization’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.

In Colorado, over 90% of mothers choose to start breastfeeding. Research shows that by implementing at least six of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the birthing facility will better support the vast majority of Colorado mothers to not only start breastfeeding, but also enable them to breastfeed longer, resulting in more long-term health benefits to both mother and child.

Both the Baby-Friendly designation award and “Celebrate 6 Award of Breastfeeding Excellence” were presented to Family Birth Center staff during the 2020 Colorado Hospital Breastfeeding Summit, held on Sept. 2, 2020.
