Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intensive Outpatient Program (DBT IOP)

BCH’s Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intensive Outpatient Program (DBT IOP) helps people learn how to better understand and manage their thoughts, feelings and actions, especially when these patterns are strong and hard to change. DBT teaches participants to accept themselves as they are, while also working on making significant changes to improve their lives.

Participants in the DBT IOP nine-week cycle will receive group therapy, as well as individual therapy sessions. A mix of talk therapy and mindfulness (paying attention to the present moment) are used in both therapy formats.

While in the program, patients get the chance to learn and practice skills associated with:

  • Mindfulness and self-acceptance
  • Distress tolerance
  • Emotional regulation
  • Interpersonal relationship effectiveness

Group DBT Therapy

The DBT IOP group meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to Noon for a nine-week cycle. New cycles begin every three weeks.

During group therapy sessions, a BCH therapist teaches important skills:

  • Staying calm during tough times,
  • Handling emotions in a healthy way,
  • Having a good relationship with self and others
  • Staying rooted in the present moment.

Individual DBT Therapy

Individual therapy, in person on a weekly basis with a BCH therapist, offers everyone a chance to talk about their own life and problems and learn how to use these DBT skills in real-world situations. If indicated, a psychiatric evaluation is an additional program component.
