May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, a reminder of the important role movement plays in overall health and well-being. Boulder County is home to a community where outdoor activity and athletics are woven into everyday life, staying active is not just a goal—it's a part of who we are.
At Boulder Community Health (BCH), we see how physical activity supports both mind and body, from heart health to mental well-being and overall quality of life. We are proud to support programs, partnerships and events that help make movement accessible, safe and sustainable for everyone in our community.
Move with purpose—Register for the Heart to Heart 5K
Whether you’re a seasoned runner or simply looking for a meaningful way to stay active, the Heart to Heart 5K is an opportunity to move with purpose. We are proud to partner with Boulderthon for our third annual Heart to Heart 5K this upcoming September 27th in downtown Boulder. This race not only supports your own personal health goals and movement but also benefits the heart health of our community.
The Heart to Heart Fund provides access to cardiovascular care for Boulder Heart patients, supporting the treatment and management of cardiac health, wellness and recovery. By participating in the 5K or donating, you are contributing to a heart-healthy future not only for yourself but for others in our community. Click here to register and learn more.
The BVSD May Madness Basketball Tournament
Supporting physical fitness starts early—and for many students, athletics play a critical role in both physical and mental development. The Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) May Madness Basketball Tournament is a community event that brings together top local talent, including BVSD alumni and collegiate athletes for a weekend of competitive, high-level basketball, all in support of student health.
Proceeds from the tournament help bridge the gap for families by providing financial support for injured student athletes who may need care beyond what is available within the school setting. This support allows students to access necessary treatment, recover safely and return to the sports they love without added financial burden. With more than 6,000 student athletes participating in sports each year, access to care is essential. Click here to learn more, get involved or make a donation.
A BCH Athletic Trainer at every BVSD school
Through a long-standing partnership between BCH, the Boulder Valley School District and CU Sports Medicine and Performance Center, certified athletic trainers are staffed in every BVSD high school, providing on-site care when it matters most.
These athletic trainers are present on the sidelines and throughout the school day, ready to evaluate injuries, manage recovery and help guide students through safe return-to-play decisions. For many athletes, athletic trainers are the first point of care, offering both clinical expertise and trusted support. This integrated approach extends beyond injury treatment. Through collaboration with CU Sports Medicine and Performance Center physicians and BCH care teams, students have access to a full continuum of care—from initial evaluation to specialized treatment and rehabilitation.
This program also includes community-wide initiatives such as concussion protocols and multidisciplinary care teams that ensure every student, from elementary school through high school, is supported. Athletic trainers, physicians and care teams often work with students and families for years, building trust and helping young athletes develop confidence, resilience and lifelong habits that support their health beyond their sports.

Staying active is not only about individual goals, it’s about supporting a healthier, stronger community for all.
