In 2025, volunteers spent 36,294 hours serving across 48 departments at Boulder Community Health. You can find our 447 active volunteers including our 36 dog volunteers at five locations across campus, sitting at the front desk, providing newborn hearing screenings, lending a helping hand to nursing staff, serving on one of our boards or providing comfort through the Canine Corps therapy dog program.
Our incredible volunteers help make BCH a welcoming space, and during National Volunteer week in April, it is our turn to honor all they do to support our staff, our patients and our community.
The week culminated with a special event in celebration of our 2025 Leo Hill Extraordinary Volunteer Award recognition, with record-setting attendance from Volunteers across the BCH health system.
Established in 2005 by Leo Hill, a former hospital board member and donor, the Leo Hill Extraordinary Volunteer Award recognizes the longevity of BCH volunteers. The annual awards are made possible through his endowment gift to the BCH Foundation. The endowment’s purpose is to provide perpetual annual support for recognizing and rewarding one or more BCH volunteers involved in extraordinary service to BCH.
Volunteers are eligible for the award after volunteering for 15 years or serving as a leader of one of the hospital boards including the BCH Board of Directors, BCH Foundation Board of Trustees or the BCH Ambassador Leadership Council.
2025 Leo Hill Award Recipients
Rosella Abramson
1,978 hours of service.
Rosella started volunteering at BCH at the Broadway location in August 2011 as a Second Floor Greeter. She was quickly lured to a volunteer position in the Broadway Gift Shop in December 2011 and found her volunteer home there. She moved to the Foothills Gift Shop in 2018, where she continues to brighten every Wednesday afternoon.
“Teamwork is at the heart of Rosella’s experience in the Gift Shop,” says Melodie Christal, BCH Gift Shop Manager. “Since 2014, she and Claudia have formed a dynamic duo, sharing laughs and stories. You might mistake their playful banter for bickering, but it’s simply the camaraderie of long-time friends. Whether they’re exchanging jokes with customers or reminiscing about memorable moments, their friendship brings warmth to the Gift Shop.
“Rosella’s friendly smile and compassionate heart shine through in every interaction. She has a contagious laugh that fills the room and makes even stressful days for hospital employees or visitors feel lighter.
“Through it all, Rosella’s dedication is unwavering—she continues to enrich the BCH community, one Wednesday at a time.”
Christine McDonald
1,248 hours of service.
Christine started volunteering in 2011 at the Broadway location in Inpatient Rehab Nursing where she served until 2019 when she transferred to Foothills. A few months later she rescheduled to the Progressive Care unit where she has been serving ever since.
“Christine displays her positive attitude at BCH, regardless of what task she performs,” says Kristy Lamoreaux, fellow volunteer in the Progressive Care unit. “Throughout our volunteer time on the PCU 2West floor, she greets the staff with a smile, a personal comment and sometimes a warm bear hug. She is interested in what the staff is doing and offers her help, sharing her knowledge and experience on many topics. Christine is also willing to do work that is new to her and is an eager learner.
“Christine is a dedicated and personable member of the staff. She takes pride in her work and is a delight to be around.”
Kristy Lamoureaux
2,129 hours of service.
Kristy started volunteering in 2011 at the Broadway location in Human Resources and Inpatient Rehab Nursing where she served until 2019 when she transferred to Foothills. A few months later she joined the team on the Progressive Care unit and has been serving there ever since.
“What a blessing it has been to have Kristy (and Christine) as part of our team,” says Melissa Vince, RN, Progressive Care unit manager. “She’s a true mentor and friend to Christine as you can see when they come to work on 2W. They’ve both been such a “third arm” to the outreach of the staff.
“Kristy has helped identify needs for patients, families and staff and has been instrumental in our unit-based process improvements and maintaining our healing environment. She is great at giving feedback on areas to improve and always ensures that the unit is left better than before she arrived.
“She’s such a welcomed presence on the unit; calm, cool, collected. She helps us be better as a place to heal. The success we have on 2W is due to having Kristy as a member of our team!”
Dr. John Fleagle
1,168 hours of service.
Started volunteering in 2011 as a Foundation Trustee where he served until 2015. He stepped in as a Covid Vaccination Volunteer from 2021-22. He joined the hospital Board of Directors in 2022 and has been serving in that capacity ever since.
Nancy Stevens
1,092 hours of service.
Nancy began her service with BCH in 2011 as a Foundation Trustee, where she went on to serve as Chair. She later joined the Hospital Board of Directors and today serves as Chair, continuing to help guide BCH through an important period of growth and evolution.
“Nancy’s impact extends far beyond BCH,” says Grant Besser, BCH Foundation President. “She has served as Chair of multiple organizations across our community, including the Boulder Community Foundation and Impact on Education, and continues to give her time and leadership to causes that strengthen our region.
“But what truly sets Nancy apart is how she leads. She brings tenacity and a deep commitment to ensuring every voice is heard. She does not shy away from difficult conversations, and she consistently pushes us to think more broadly and act more boldly, always with the goal of better serving our community.
“Nancy, thank you for your leadership, your courage, and your unwavering commitment to BCH and the people we serve.”
Thank you and congratulations to this year’s incredible volunteer recipients!
Judy Collins
4,323 hours of service.
Judy started volunteering in the Broadway Gift Shop in 2011 and moved to the Foothills Gift Shop in 2014. Judy is a member of the BCH Ambassadors and currently serves as the secretary. She has volunteered in other roles over the years including at the Grillo Health Information Center from 2012 to 2021 and at the BCH Ambassadors Fashion Show.
“Judy is always one of the first to volunteer for less glamorous tasks, approaching each one with a smile and positive attitude that inspires those around her,” say the BCH Ambassadors.
“In Judy’s spare time, she enjoys spending time with family, ice hockey (her entire family plays), reading, and keeping up with current events. When Judy does decide to retire from volunteering at BCH, she will leave very big shoes to fill!”
Cynthia Stevens
742 hours of service.
Cynthia started volunteering with the Newborn Hearing Program in 2011. She has been serving in this capacity since her start date. During the worst of COVID, volunteers were no longer allowed in the birth unit. However, Cynthia volunteered, once again, this time to sit at the concierge desk outside the birth unit. Her dedication to BCH is so amazing and truly wonderful.
“Cynthia’s hard work, dedication, time and commitment to our Volunteer Programs have not gone unnoticed,” says Glenda Diggins, Birth Registrar. We are extremely blessed and very grateful for her time. Her positive attitude as a BCH volunteer is a warm and loving example for other volunteers to see.
“New parents have benefitted from Cynthia’s experience, kindness and gentle ways for many years. Cynthia always has a smile on her face and that positive attitude of hers is very contagious. Cynthia is truly a blessing for our Newborn Hearing Program and BCH.”
Bettijean Mintling – not attending
2,252 hours of service.
Bettijean started volunteering in 2011 at the Broadway location with the Coffee Cart until 2012 when she came over to the Foothills campus to serve at the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center front desk until 2021. In 2017 she started assisting the Accounting department seasonally at year-end. In 2022 she joined the team at the Surgery Concierge desk and has been serving there ever since.
“Bettijean has been a savior in the Accounting Department for nearly eight years,” says Darlyn McLees, Accounts Payable Supervisor. “Each year, she spends two to three weeks organizing and labeling all our files for the upcoming year. Her work saves the Accounts Payable team from having to find the time—and patience—to complete this task themselves.
“She always arrives with a smile and is willing to help in any way she can. She has truly become part of the General Accounting family. Bettijean has been a tremendous asset to our team, and we look forward to working with her every year. We are truly grateful for her dedication, kindness, and continued support.”
Pamela Outlaw
567 hours of service.
Pamela started volunteering at BCH in 2011 and has served in several different roles including assisting with the Tennis Marathon from 2013-2015 and chairing the 2016 BCH Ambassadors spring plant sale. More recently, she coordinates the coloring books and crayons for the Emergency Department and organizes clothing items for the SANE program for sexual assault victims.
“Pamela approaches every project and responsibility with unwavering commitment, investing her heart and soul into all that she undertakes,” say the BCH Ambassadors. “Her dedication ensures that any task she takes on is completed efficiently and with the utmost professionalism.”
Milestone Recognition Pins
In addition to recognizing our Leo Hill Award Recipients, Volunteers were also recognized with milestone pins representing their years of service at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years, with an additional pin for volunteers who have served 300+ hours. Special recognition is due for Jim Boeck, our longest-serving active volunteer.
Thank you to all your BCH Volunteers—the incredible work you do makes a meaningful difference to patients, families and staff every day.
