Interventional Radiology
What is interventional radiology?
An increasingly popular sub-specialty of radiology, interventional radiology
(IR) provides minimally invasive, image-guided diagnosis and treatment
of conditions in ever organ system. IR procedures are guided by modern
medical imaging technology –
CT,
fluoroscopy,
MRI and
ultrasound – and use tiny, highly specialized tools, such as catheters, wires,
stents and ablation probes.
Because IR procedures are generally associated with lower infection rates,
less pain and shorter recovery times for patients, they provide a compelling
alternative to comparable surgical procedures.
When is interventional radiology recommended?
BCH’s board-certified, specialized interventional radiologists utilize
the latest technology to diagnose and treat common conditions, such as:
-
Varicose Veins – Comprehensive evaluation and minimally invasive treatment
-
Abdominal (& Thoracic) Aortic Aneurysm – Endovascular stent grafting treatment
-
Uterine Fibroids – Embolization treatment (X-ray fluoroscopy) to shrink fibroid tumors
-
Organ Cancers – Innovative organ-directed treatments, including ablations (eliminating
problem areas with heat energy or extreme cold), chemoembolization and
radioembolization
-
Arterial and Venous Vascular Conditions – Minimally invasive treatments for peripheral vascular disease,
deep venous thrombosis, and more
A referring physician often orders interventional radiology procedures.
Ask your doctor if an IR treatment is an appropriate option for you.
