BCH’s Electrophysiology Lab Receives Healthy Hospital Award

Award Recognizes BCH for Exceptional Commitment to Healthcare Sustainability

Boulder Community Health (BCH) is proud to announce it has received a Healthy Hospital Gold Award from Stryker’s Sustainability Solutions division. The ‘healthy hospital’ designation is reserved for select hospitals that demonstrate outstanding leadership in environmental sustainability and in overall hospital quality through medical device remanufacturing and reprocessing.

This honor is specifically awarded to the Electrophysiology Lab (EP) at BCH’s Foothills Hospital. During the past 10 years, the team’s reprocessing program has successfully diverted 14,821 pounds of waste from landfills. During the past 12 months, through the EP team’s efforts, 514 pounds has been recycled.

“Stryker is pleased to honor Boulder Community Health’s continued dedication to achieving both environmental and financial sustainability,” said Brian White, president of Stryker’s Sustainability Solutions division. “With a heightened focus on improving value in today’s healthcare environment, BCH’s Electrophysiology Lab leads by example with their commitment to sustainability initiatives that reduce costs and optimize resources to support quality care.”

BCH has partnered with Stryker’s Sustainability Solutions division, the nation’s leading reprocessor of medical devices, on its reprocessing programs since 2010.

Like many hospitals across the nation, BCH is focused on growing its sustainability programs to reduce the environmental footprint of delivery of care. In 2020, the EP Lab’s sustainability initiative alone created $285,500 in savings, allowing those funds to be redirected into key patient care avenues.

BCH is in the distinguished company of other leading hospitals that are implementing reprocessing programs. In fact, reprocessing programs are currently employed by nearly all the U.S. News & World Report “Honor Roll” hospitals.

In addition to the strong waste diversion and supply cost savings, BCH thanks and recognizes the team members of our EP Lab for their commitment to healthcare resource sustainability, especially during 2020, a year defined by the COVID-19 pandemic. Congratulations to Casey Dunning, John Whiteside, Gail Chauvin and Christi Goettsche.

The EP Lab at BCH’s Boulder Heart offers one of Colorado’s most sophisticated facilities for diagnosing and treating heartbeat irregularities. This lab is equipped with advanced technologies such as an all-digital biplane fluoroscopy system, Carto 3D mapping system and intra-cardiac ultrasound. Radiofrequency (RF) ablation and cryoablation are both available at Boulder Heart as forms of arrhythmia treatment.

Boulder Heart is the only full-service cardiology program in Boulder County, offering evidence-based, highly specialized care to patients. More information is available at bch.org/heart.
