Keeping Your Kids Safe at the Pool this Summer

Drowning is the leading cause of preventable death in children between the ages of 1 and 4. BCH internal medical physician Dr. Christopher Trojanovich recommends that parents take a few minutes to visit the national pool safety website www.poolsafely.gov to review crucial water safety tips to follow at public and residential pools and spas and learn how to best teach children how to be safer in and around the water.

According to Dr. Trojanovich, "[Swimming is] probably one of the most fun things you can do in the world, but it's also very dangerous." Parents should never leave young children unattended in a swimming pool and should get children into swim lessons as early as possible. If your child swallows or takes on a lot of water while swimming, Dr. Trojanovich recommends a visit to the Emergency Room for monitoring if your child is experiencing a lot of coughing or having difficulty breathing.
