Boulder Community Health (BCH) is excited to announce the installation of a new mural at the Della Cava Family Medical Pavilion Behavioral Health inpatient unit. Donated by the Mangat Family and designed by Boulder artist Jessica Moon Bernstein-Schiano, the artwork brings warmth and inspiration to the space.
Lindsay Mangat, who has volunteered for several years on the inpatient unit at the Della Cava Family Medical Pavilion, saw an opportunity to make the environment feel more welcoming and comforting for patients.
“I couldn’t help but notice a large, bare, white wall in the dining room. It felt stark and empty in a place where warmth, comfort, and humanity matter deeply. I’ve seen firsthand how environment can affect mood, healing, and daily experience for both patients and the dedicated staff who support them” says Lindsay.
The goal was simple: to brighten the space with something uplifting. By bringing nature indoors, the mural offers a sense of calm connection, reflecting growth and renewal. Lindsay states, “most importantly, the artwork carries a message of hope: that healing is possible, brighter days lie ahead, and no one is alone.”
Lindsay and the BCH behavioral health team thought that supporting a local Boulder artist would not only benefit the patients but ground the artwork in our community with intention. Jessica was drawn to this project because of her deep belief in the role art can play in healing spaces.
“As an artist, I think often about how environments affect how we feel, especially during moments of uncertainty or vulnerability,” she explains. “Creating this mural for Della Cava felt like an opportunity to offer something gentle and human within a clinical setting.”
Jessica Moon Bernstein-Schiano’s thoughtful design has transformed the inpatient behavioral health unit’s common space with vibrant, nature-inspired artwork that brings calm, hope, and connection to those receiving care. The BCH Foundation was proud to help make this collaboration possible, building upon an already intentional healing environment and deepening the sense of comfort and support patients experience in this space.
