April 'Walk With A Doc': Cholesterol Really Does Matter

On April 14, the BCH 'Walk With a Doc' program hosted a morning walk around Tom Watson Park and beautiful Coot Lake in Boulder.

Our special guest speaker was Dr. Nelson Trujillo, board-certified cardiologist at BCH’s Boulder Heart. Dr. Trujillo led a lively, interactive talk addressing common “myths” about the role cholesterol plays in heart health.

Lowering cholesterol levels does matter, Dr. Trujillo said, despite recent reports (which he called “fake news”) that cholesterol is a less important risk factor than once thought and that statins are `bad for you.’ Given that about a third of global deaths are due to stroke or heart disease, Dr. Trujillo told the crowd: “We will save about half of these people if we can lower their cholesterol.” He added that how you lower cholesterol is not as important as getting it done.

Dr. Trujillo’s Top 4 Lifestyle Tips to Lower "Bad" Cholesterol
Walk—any moderate physical activity
“Eat food that comes from the ground or has a mother.”
Lose weight
Sleep well

Join us for our next walk in May, where neurologist Dr. Satish Rao will explain the importance of “Sleep and Dreaming” in terms of cardiovascular and overall health. The walk with be held on May 12 at East Boulder Community Park (5660 Sioux Drive) in Boulder from 8 - 9:00 a.m.
