Joseph Cassara, MD

Dr. Cassara is a board-certified gastroenterologist certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with expertise in advanced therapeutic endoscopic procedures. He has practiced medicine in the Denver/Boulder area for over 14 years and aspires to deliver exceptional patient-centered care while improving the systems for health care delivery.

Dr. Cassara attended medical school at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, Vermont. Upon his graduation from medical school, Dr. Cassara completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC, where he also served as a Chief Resident and a Clinical Instructor. He also completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology at UNC Hospitals with training in advanced therapeutic endoscopic techniques (EUS, ERCP, more). During this time, he was twice awarded Teacher of the Year by interns and medical students, and has several publications in a diverse array of medical topics.

​Dr. Cassara is grounded in a variety of different career experiences before and after medical school. He has worked on farms, as a convenience store manager and an emergency medical technician. He is also a recognized national leader in communication skills and leadership development, and has started a national center of excellence for clinician-patient communications. He is committed to improving the overall care of patients and has led critical operational and systems improvements in large integrated care delivery models. Dr. Cassara has always enjoyed careers that allow him to interact directly with people and that require strong teamwork. This teamwork approach includes a patient-centric philosophy of listening to patients, understanding their problems, and keeping them involved in the decision-making process to develop a trusting relationship for the best possible outcomes.

Dr. Cassara is passionate about preventing cancer and optimizing the care of patients who are challenged with cancers of the GI tract including those of the pancreas, esophagus, stomach, and colon. He applies the most advanced diagnostic and treatment tools and evidence based medicine to help his patients. 

Dr. Cassara loves the outdoors and likes to spend time cooking outside with his family and friends. He enjoys spending time with his wife, their two children, and their two dogs. He enjoys tennis, pickle-ball, cross-fit, hiking, golf, chess, landscaping and reading. He also occasionally enjoys binge watching a new streaming Netflix series, if you have a favorite, please mention it when you meet him.
