Patient Safety & Quality

Our #1 priority is to deliver high-quality patient care in a safe environment. BCH has a comprehensive Patient Safety/Quality plan that calls on our leaders, staff and physicians to do their part in ensuring our safety and quality care exceeds national standards.

BCH seeks to provide safe and evidence-based care through consistent commitment to the regulations provided by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Joint Commission and the State of Colorado.

Organizational Structure

The BCH Board of Directors has a designated Board Patient Safety Committee that provides primary oversight of our Patient Safety/Quality plan. We also have a Medical Staff Executive committee responsible for overseeing the quality of services provided by physicians and medical staff; a Patient Safety Council (comprised of management council members, physician section chiefs, directors, risk management and representatives from the Division of Organizational Excellence) responsible for providing regular reports to the Board Patient Safety Committee and the Medical Staff Executive Committee; and a CEO appointed Chief Medical Officer/Patient Safety Officer that reports to the Division of Organizational Excellence. There are also more than 30 designated committees across the organization tasked with monitoring and improving patient safety initiatives.

Division of Organizational Excellence

Organizational Excellence under the direction of the CMO/Patient Safety Officer is responsible for the oversight of all BCH patient safety and quality initiatives. The DOE consists of the following departments: Clinical Education, Regulatory Readiness, Performance Excellence, Patient Safety, Decision Support, Patient Services, Spiritual Care, Infection Prevention, and Employee Health. The DOE facilitates the development of an annual BCH Patient Safety/Quality Plan and the annual patient safety/quality initiatives that are measurable and support one or more of the BCH strategic goals.

Our Quality Scores

Patient safety data on our hospital can be obtained through some external agencies, including the Colorado Hospital Association (CHA) and the CMS.

  • CHA - CHA, which provides hospitals with information and assistance on how to improve patient safety, efficiency and effectiveness, has developed a CHA report card that provides insight into the quality and safety performance of Colorado hospitals. Read more.
  • CMS - CMS, the agency that runs Medicare and Medicaid, posts results of Consumer Assessment of Health Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys, which uniformly measure and publicly report patient perspectives on their inpatient care. Read more.

Speak-up Campaign

BCH is part of the “Speak Up” campaign, a nationwide initiative designed to inform hospital visitors and patients about their important role in infection prevention and overall patient safety. Customized brochures are distributed to all hospital inpatients that review important safety information and encourage individuals to “speak up” when they have safety-related questions or concerns.

Joint Commission

The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to continuous improvement in health care for the public. The Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards.
