Dr. Wael Garas grew up in Ohio, received his medical degree from Ohio State
University and completed his residency with the University of Nevada.
A deep interest in addressing the root causes of illness through a holistic
approach to patient care led Dr. Garas to complete a fellowship in Integrative
Medicine with the University of Arizona under the direction of Andrew
Weil MD. In addition to an integrative fellowship, he has received Functional
Medicine training through the Institute of Functional Medicine and has
a background and deep interest in Western Herbalism. Dr. Garas has worked
as a hospitalist for many years caring for critically ill patients and
managing complex primary care patients.
Dr. Garas believes that mind, body and spirit are intimately connected.
It is often the case that all aspects of a patient’s well-being
need to be addressed in order to find healing from illness and disease.
Dr. Garas is amazed at the beauty and complexity of the human body and
he believes the body has an inherent capacity to move toward healing when
the root causes of illness are found and addressed. In his medical practice,
Dr. Garas advocates for optimizing lifestyle behaviors including diet,
exercise and mind-body practices that develop emotional resiliency including
addressing past traumas that may underlie illness and health concerns.
His positive and supportive approach helps patients explore their motivations
to make changes that will lead to improved health and well-being. Dr.
Garas has a passion for herbalism and plant medicines and advocates for
their use when gentler remedies are desired, but also believes that medications
and surgery are helpful and necessary when stronger interventions are
needed. Dr. Garas fluidly navigates both worlds of conventional and integrative
medicine and meets patients where they are, working with their health
goals, priorities and preferred modalities.
Dr. Garas enjoys being outdoors, hiking, skiing and trail running. He has
been an avid meditator and yoga student for over 15 years. He has a strong
interest in indigenous practices and philosophy including healing modalities.
Dr. Garas lives in the mountains near Nederland with his wife, teenage
daughter and 2 German Shorthaired Pointers.
