Age: People 55 years and older have a much greater risk of stroke than younger people do. Gender: Men have a 30% greater risk of stroke than women do. Race: African-Americans have a 60% greater risk of death and disability from a stroke than Caucasians. This may be because African-Americans are statistically more likely to have high blood pressure. Prior Stroke: The risk of stroke is much greater for someone who has already had a stroke than for someone who has not. Heredity: The risk of stroke is somewhat greater for people who have a family history of stroke.
