Boulder Community Health provides comprehensive pulmonary services for patients who have or are at risk for lung disease. Our program is staffed by pulmonary specialists who offer diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education for patients of all ages with breathing difficulties. Our highly qualified team includes:
- respiratory therapists
- diagnostic technicians
Conditions treated include asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer and lung conditions that result from trauma. Our pulmonary services include:
Bronchial Thermoplasty (BT) is the latest innovation in the treatment of severe asthma. BT is a safe outpatient procedure performed by a specially-trained pulmonologist using mild heat to reduce the amount of excess smooth muscle tissue in the airways. Less muscle tissue means patients can breathe more easily -- and are less likely to have an asthma attack.
Patients treated with Bronchial Thermoplasty experience significant improvement in their asthma-related quality of life. If you have severe or persistent asthma that is not well controlled by asthma medications, you may be a candidate for BT. Cardiopulmonary Stress Testing
A cardiopulomnary stress test, also known as an exercise tolerance test, can determine whether your heart is getting the required blood flow needed to deliver a sufficient oxygen supply while it is working hardest, such as during exercise. Stress tests are one of the best tools for evaluating heart disease in people who experience chest pain with activity, have risk factors for heart disease such as high cholesterol, diabetes or smoking, as well as older individuals wanting to start an intensive exercise routine.
Stress tests are performed at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine. For more information about stress testing, call

Pulmonary Function Testing
Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are non-invasive diagnostic tests that check to see how well your lungs work. PFTs can diagnose lung diseases and measure the severity of lung problems. If you are receiving treatment for a lung disease, a PFT can help determine how well that therapy is working.
PFTs are performed by a licensed respiratory care therapist and must be ordered by a physician. For more information, call 303-442-2395.
Our Pulmonary Rehabilitation program is specifically designed for patients with chronic lung conditions. Our team of medical experts provides patients with the tools they need to manage their condition and improve their quality of life through:
- Comprehensive education
- Stress management
- Lifestyle modification
- Supervised exercise
- Medical testing
- Home exercise programs
If you would like to join our program, ask your physician for a pulmonary rehabilitation referral. Then call the BCH Cardiopulmonary Department at 303-440-2150 to set up an appointment.
At Boulder Community Health, we have licensed respiratory therapists available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In the outpatient setting, our respiratory therapists assist physicians in diagnosing pulmonary illnesses and provide therapy, management and education to improve respiratory health. They can provide important information for patients with cardiac or pulmonary disease conditions on self-management techniques designed to help individuals and families deal with chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma and COPD.
Outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation and diagnostic testing is available by appointment with a physician referral. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, call the BCH Cardiopulmonary Department at 303-440-2150.
