Nephrologists specialize in the diagnoses and treatment of kidney problems. Nephrologists are educated in internal medicine and then undergo several more years of training to specialize in kidney care. Kidneys do several things to keep you healthy, including cleaning and filtering blood to remove waste; stimulating production of red blood cells; maintaining the blood’s water volume and balance of various minerals (potassium, sodium, chloride, calcium, phosphorus) and regulating blood pressure.
Nephrologists also manage the care of patients on dialysis. Dialysis is the process of cleansing the blood by passing it through a special machine. Dialysis is necessary when a person’s kidneys are not able to filter the blood properly. Western Nephrology
