Certified Orthopedic Nurses

BCH is very proud that we can offer our patients 24/7 access to nurses who have earned Orthopaedic Nursing Certification (ONC), the only credential that documents an advanced level of knowledge and practice in orthopedic nursing.

Obtaining ONC is a rigorous undertaking. To receive ONC, a nurse must:

  • Pass a certification examination that covers the full spectrum of orthopedic problems, from degenerative disorders, sports injuries and joint replacements to the most complex conditions.

  • Have a minimum of 1,000 hours of work experience in orthopedic nursing. That extensive experience must be within the three years prior to taking the exam.

There are only about 150 nurses in Colorado who have this certification.

Benefits for Patients

ONC certification demonstrates that BCH nurses have attained the highest standards in orthopedic nursing. It confirms they have the specialized orthopedic knowledge, skills and critical thinking that can lead to high quality patient care, improved patient safety and excellent medical outcomes.
