MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a highly specialized test that produces very clear images of the body without the use of X-rays.  Boulder Community Hospital offers three state of the art 1.5 tesla MRI's and one Open MRI scanner.

Benefits of MRI

Main uses of MRI are for diagnosis of health problems including internal injuries, early-stage strokes, cancers, musculoskeletal problems, brain and nervous system disorders and state of the art cardiac scanning. The scan is also used to evaluate soft tissue masses, bone tumors and spinal problems such as herniated discs.  Boulder Community Hospital offers some specific specialty exams not offered by most facilities.  These inclued Breast Imaging, MRI guided needle localization

How It Works

The MRI scanner produces a wide variety of two and three-dimensional images using a large magnet, radio waves, and a computer. The patient lies on his back on a bed that is moved into a horizontal tube. The machine uses short bursts of a powerful magnetic field to create images. During the scan, you must lie very still for about 30 to 45 minutes. The scanner makes loud tapping sounds each time a part of the body is being scanned, so headphones or earplugs are available to lessen the sounds. There is no preparation required for a MRI scan.

A board-certified radiologist interprets the images created by the scan and sends a report to your physician.

MRI is a pain-free procedure and a wonderful diagnostic tool for many people. However, necessary precautions need to be followed. Because magnets are used, some people are not good candidates for this exam, such as individuals with heart pacemakers. Always provide your doctor with important information about your health before having a MRI.

In Preperation

Please be sure to notify your physician if you have any kidney issues and he/she has ordered your MRI with contrast.  Please also notify your physician or the MRI department at 303- 938-5150 if you are claustrophobic.  You must be able to lie still for about 30 to 40 minutes.  If lying still is an issue for you please contact your physician or the MRI department at 303-938-5150.
