2014

One of America's Best Breast Centers -- recognition provided by The Women's Choice Award.  This award recognizes the high quality of our breast cancer services and our dedication to meeting the needs of women. We are the only hospital north of Denver to receive this award.

Way to Go Employer Champion Award -- recognition provided by the Denver Regional Council of Governments. This award honors innovation and initiative in workplace programs and practices that encourage employees to choose commuting options that are healthier, more affordable and improve traffic congestion and air quality.

"A" Rating for Hospital Safety -- recognition provided by The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog that compiles The Hospital Safety Score which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections.

Boulder County Gold Award for Best Medical Facility – recognition provided in annual Daily Camera readers’ poll. (13th consecutive year)

National Certification for Hip and Knee Replacement - recognition provided by The Joint Commission, the nation’s largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. BCH earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® by demonstrating compliance with national standards for quality and safety. We are one of only five Colorado hospitals to have earned these important certifications.

Health Care Heroes Distinguished Service Award – Connie Holden, RN, BCH Director of Oncology Services & the 2NW nursing unit at Foothills Hospital; recognition provided by the Boulder County Business Report. The Distinguished Service Award honors a health care professional with at least 20 years service to the local community.

Pacesetter Award for Community Service – BCH patient representative, Claire Riley; recognition provided by The Daily Camera.  The Pacesetter Community Service Award honors those who have demonstrated exemplary volunteerism and who have made significant contributions to the quality of life in Boulder and the surrounding region.

Top Physician 2012 - Dr. Shirley Huang of Internal Medicine Associates; recognition provided by Boulder Meridian Senior Living. Residents were asked to nominate physicians who exemplified excellence in customer service. (2nd consecutive year)

2012 Patient's Choice Award - Dr. Sharad Rajpal of Boulder Neurosurgical and Spine Associates; recognition provided by PatientsChoice.org, an online resource for patients looking for quality care.  The Patient's Choice award is based on reviews from patients asked about various components of care, such as bedside manner, doctor-patient face time, degree of follow-up and courtesy of office staff.  Of the nation’s 870,000 active physicians, only 5 percent were honored by their patients as a Choice physician. (2nd consecutive year)

*CareChex Awards in Cardiac Care – safest hospital in Colorado for Major Cardiac Surgery and top 10% of hospitals nationwide for patient safety in that area.  In addition, the hospital’s interventional coronary care services received double recognition, being ranked in the top 10% of Colorado hospitals for both medical excellence and patient safety.

Breastfeeding Excellence Award - The Family Birth Center received a Breastfeeding Excellence Starts Today (BEST) Award for efforts to encourage and support breastfeeding; recognition provided by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.  BCH was one of only 13 hospitals in Colorado to receive this award.

National Leader in Flu Vaccinations - BCH achieved "Gold Level" status in the 2010-2011 Flu Vaccination Challenge; recognition provided by the Joint Commission.  The Joint Commission's Flu Vaccination Challenge is a nationwide charge to health care organizations to increase flu vaccination among staff.  The Gold Level is reserved for organizations that reached an employee vaccination rate of 95% or greater during the 2010-2011 flu season.  Only 17% of the organizations reporting their data achieved Gold Level status.

Patient's Choice Award - Dr. Alexander Mason of Boulder Neurosurgical and Spine Associates.  Recognition provided by vitals.com, an online physician evaluation service.  The Patient's Choice award is based on rave reviews from patients asked about their doctors' bedside manner, doctor-patient face time, degree of follow-up, courtesy of office staff, and overall opinions.  Of the nation’s 720,000 active physicians, only 5 percent were honored by their patients as a Choice physician. (4th consecutive year)

Top Doctor in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology - Dr. Sameer Oza of Rocky Mountain Cardiology.  Recognition provided by 5280 Magazine. For the annual Top Doctor issue, 5280 surveys doctors and asks them, specialty by specialty, which Denver metro-area physicians they would trust to treat themselves and their families.

Environmental Leadership Circle - BCH’s environmental leadership recognized with induction into the ELC, the most prestigious award presented by Practice Greenhealth, a national membership organization for health care facilities committed to environmentally responsible operations. The ELC recognizes facilities that exemplify environmental excellence.

Excellence in Educational Leadership and Excellence in Educational Scholarship – Dr. Eugene Chu, director of hospital medicine at BCH.  Recognition provided by the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s Academy of Medical Educators.  Awardees are nominated by students, residents, fellows, faculty and peers for demonstrating excellence in medical education.

Service Above Self Award – Darryl Brown, director of cardiovascular services; recognition provided by Rotary International.  Mr. Brown was recognized for the far-reaching impact of volunteer projects he coordinated in Kenya. There are less than 150 of these awards given in the world annually.

Approval by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance

Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence - Boulder Community Hospital, Boulder Community Foothills Hospital and Boulder Medical Center imaging facilities; recognition provided by the American College of Radiology (a national organization dedicated to advancing the science of radiology and improving patient care). After thorough peer review evaluations, each of these BCH imaging locations were determined to have superior practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.

Stroke Care Specialty Excellence Award – recognition provided by HealthGrades, an online service that rates hospitals and physicians.  This award recognizes the top 10% of U.S. hospitals for stroke care, as determined by HealthGrades’ proprietary research methodology.

Health Care Heroes Professional Award – David Gehant, President/CEO of Boulder Community Hospital; recognition provided by the Boulder County Business Report.  The Professional Award honors a health-care administrator who has displayed excellence within his or her organization.

Humanitarian Award - Darryl Brown, director of cardiovascular services; recognition provided by the Boulder Rotary Club.  The Humanitarian Award honors a person who was instrumental in implementing a project that improved the quality of life for one or more individuals or for a community.

Gold Leader in environmental leadership - Boulder Community Hospital; recognition provided by The Colorado Environmental Leadership Program, a statewide environmental recognition and reward program administered by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Sustainability Program.  Gold Leader status is awarded to those organizations with environmental management practices that go above and beyond compliance with state and federal laws.  BCH was the first hospital in Colorado to be officially recognized by the State for such a consistent commitment to environmental leadership. 

Healthy Community Award - The Beacon Center for Infectious Diseases; recognition provided by Boulder County Public Health.  The Healthy Community Award recognizes individuals and groups in the Boulder County community that address public health needs and issues.

Patient Satisfaction Awards – Boulder Community Hospital Emergency Department and Foothills Hospital; recognition provided by HealthStream Research.  The BCH Emergency Department was named Most Improved in patient satisfaction among 219 hospital EDs that did patient surveys with HealthStream.  The BCH Emergency Department also won the award for highest Overall Satisfaction among 81 hospitals in BCH’s size category.  The Foothills Hospital  had the highest Overall Inpatient Satisfaction among 85 hospitals surveyed.

Health Care Heroes Emergency Services Award – Dr. Todd Dorfman; emergency services physician, recognition provided by the Boulder County Business Report.  The Emergency Services Award honors a person or organization that has gone above and beyond the call of duty in a life-saving endeavor.  Dr. Dorfman also received an important honor from the American Heart Association. (Dr. Dorfman was on vacation in Maine and saved the life of a 5-year-old who almost drowned).

Career Teaching Scholar Award – Dr. Francesco Beuf of The Pediatric Center; recognition provided by the University of Colorado Medical School’s Department of Pediatrics.  The award recognizes exceptional commitment to pediatric education.

H2E Environmental Excellence Award – recognition provided by Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E) for BCH’s environmental leadership.  H2E is a joint program of the American Hospital Association, American Nurses Association, Health Care Without Harm and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Health Care Heroes Distinguished Service Award – Dr. Sherburne Macfarlan, retired from Boulder Medical Center; recognition provided by the Boulder County Business Report. The Distinguished Service Award honors a health care professional with at least 20 years service to the local community.

Health Care Heroes Professional Award – Russ Larson, director of Community Medical Center in Lafayette; recognition provided by the Boulder County Business Report.  The Professional Award honors a health-care administrator who has displayed excellence within his or her organization.

New Pioneers Award – Andy Pruitt, Ed.D, clinical director of Boulder Center for Sports Medicine; recognition provided by Boulder History Museum’s New Pioneers Award program, which recognizes innovative contributions to the local community.
